Lando Norris led the protocol on the first day of tests in Bahrain. The McLaren driver got behind the wheel in the afternoon and, together with the team, experimented with the basic settings of the MCL39. His team-mate Oscar Piastri tested the aerodynamics in the morning session.

Lando Norris (1st): "It's great to be back in the car! Many thanks to the team for preparing everything for today. It was a good and interesting day on the track – we tested a lot, as we wanted to. I'm looking forward to getting more out of the car in the next few days."

Oscar Piastri (17th): "So, the first day behind the wheel of the MCL39 is over. Thanks to everyone in the team for preparing for today.

I had a productive morning – we tested a lot, and overall, it was nice to be back on the track. There are still many areas to work on in the coming days to test the machine and understand how it works. Overall, a good day."

Andrea Stella, Team Principal: "A productive day for the MCL39 in official testing. The team and the riders did a good job completing a busy program, so we have a lot more information at the end of the day.

In the morning, Oscar mainly tested the aerodynamics, and in the afternoon, Lando and I evaluated the basic settings, making many changes to them.

Today it was cooler than usual and there was a strong wind, which complicated the conditions on the track for everyone. Anyway, thanks to everyone who works at the track and at the base in the UK. We have collected a lot of useful information, which we will use tomorrow."
