Antonelli: I felt that we and the car were one whole.
Kimi Antonelli won the Monaco Grand Prix, and that in itself is a special achievement, but yesterday's victory was the fifth in a row for the 19-year-old Mercedes driver, who first stepped onto the top podium in China, and since then none of his rivals have managed to displace him from there.
At the post-race press conference, he talked about the key events of the past weekend...
Question: Kimi, congratulations on your victory and share your impressions, how sweet is its taste?
Kimi Antonelli: Yes, I am very pleased. This weekend went really well, and the team did an incredibly successful job – primarily regarding the rear wing that we brought to this race.
But it’s also worth noting that after Friday's practice, we managed to improve by Saturday. The car became much better – of course, thanks to this, I was able to drive much more confidently and attack more actively. I just enjoyed being behind the wheel!
Question: Then tell us more about how the race went. Were you surprised by the level of superiority you achieved in this Grand Prix?
Kimi Antonelli: Yes, the pace surprised me, but today I really felt that the car and I were one, and I just managed to find the right rhythm, which was very intense, and the car responded very well to all my actions. Overall, I was definitely surprised, but it was one of those days when everything came together as it should.
Question: Were you very upset when the race was stopped by red flags? What were you thinking then? What did you try to focus on?
Kimi Antonelli: I was very upset, because this time Lewis Hamilton started next to me, and since we know how well Ferrari drivers start, I thought... However, what I thought then cannot be repeated here because it was an inappropriate word, but the meaning was: "Well, that's something!"
Fortunately, the restart went well. Moreover, Lewis had a strong wheel spin, which made my task a bit easier as I entered Turn 1. But it was really difficult to refocus after the red flags.
Question: It seems you had excellent starts in Monaco. Do you think the difficulties you faced earlier in the season are behind you?
Kimi Antonelli: Definitely, we made a big step forward in Canada in this regard, but we need to keep working. In my opinion, the first start in the Grand Prix went a bit better for me. The restart didn’t go as well, but good progress has been made, that’s for sure.
Question: Now your lead in the championship has significantly increased, you are ahead of Lewis by 66 points. I suppose such a gap gives you extra confidence?
Kimi Antonelli: Yes, of course, this is a very pleasant moment, and therefore I must continue to make the most of every opportunity – in every race and every session. And try to perform as consistently as possible.
Of course, each stage of the season is a new challenge, as the races take place on different tracks that require different approaches. But undoubtedly, we will make every effort and just continue to attack. We need to raise the bar higher and try to do everything in my power to handle the task as well as possible.
Question: The growth of your achievements is clearly visible after the races of the European part of last season, which did not go well, but towards the end of that championship, you showed excellent results, for example, stepping onto the podium in São Paulo and Las Vegas. And now you have already achieved your fifth consecutive victory – how do you explain such progress?
Kimi Antonelli: Of course, I have become a much more mature driver. I believe that last year taught me a lot – this applies to both successful moments but primarily to the unsuccessful ones. And I think that despite all those bad moments, I managed to rebuild and return to a good level, which was truly important.
This allowed me to achieve professional growth and significantly change my mindset compared to last year. And regarding what happened last year, I don’t worry about it at all and just try to focus as much as possible on the tasks that are in front of me now.
