Pirelli explained the choice of compounds for Barcelona.
Formula 1 returns to Barcelona six months after the first tests of the new generation cars. It was on the Spanish track that the current season effectively started, when teams spent five days testing, getting acquainted with the cars that have radically changed following the introduction of the new technical regulations.
This weekend, Formula 1 will once again come to Barcelona for the seventh round of the season, which is named after the city and the autonomy. As for the Spanish Grand Prix, from this year it will take place in Madrid – the debut race is scheduled for September. Additionally, the round in Barcelona will occur a few weeks later than the usual schedule.
Tire manufacturers from Pirelli will bring the C2 (Hard), C3 (Medium), and C4 (Soft) compounds to Barcelona – this option is one step softer than the usual selection for the Spanish track. Pirelli hopes that this combination of compounds will increase strategy options in the race and the number of pit stops, as well as allow for more frequent use of hard tires.
Barcelona is rightly considered one of the most versatile tracks in the championship. Its length is 4657 meters, and the configuration combines long straights and 14 corners, many of which can be taken at high speed.
There are significant lateral loads on the tires, especially on the left ones, as there are nine right turns throughout the lap. The most demanding in this regard are the third corner and the final section, which was redesigned in 2023 to make the exit onto the main straight smoother.
Overheating is the main tire issue in Barcelona. As with wear, the primary load falls on the front tires. Additionally, the very abrasive and quite old asphalt creates extra stress on the rubber. It should also be noted that due to the later date of the event, the track temperature will be higher than in previous years.
There is particular interest in what innovations the teams will bring to Barcelona. Traditionally, this round is considered one of the key ones in terms of car updates. Changes may even affect the wheel rims, which directly influence the heat exchange between the asphalt, tires, and brakes.
After the race weekend, Pirelli will remain in Barcelona for two more days – on June 16 and 17, prototype tire tests for the 2027 season will take place at the track. Teams Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Cadillac will participate in the tests.
