Provost asserts that Renault will remain in F1 'for an extended period.'
Renault CEO Francois Provost has sought to reassure Formula 1 regarding the carmaker’s long-term commitment to the sport amid the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the team’s ownership. The Enstone-based team has been the subject of speculation over recent weeks and months, especially after negotiations for Otro Capital’s 24 percent stake with Mercedes fell through, and Renault reportedly shows reluctance to collaborate again with former Red Bull chief Christian Horner. Additionally, the Chinese automotive giant BYD has been mentioned in connection with a potential Formula 1 project.
Speaking to RTBF, Provost emphasized that Renault considers Formula 1 a vital aspect of its future. "We’re going to be in F1 for a long time," he declared. "F1 is the most popular sport worldwide, followed by 800 million to 1 billion people."
Provost, who took over from Luca de Meo at Renault, noted that Alpine is beginning to recover from a challenging period after finishing last in the constructors’ championship in 2025. “When I was appointed, I asked the team to stabilize, and everything is slowly coming together," he mentioned. "I can see the new dynamics."
He expressed support for Alpine's current driver lineup, stating that Pierre Gasly is contracted until 2028 and Franco Colapinto is increasingly seen as an integral part of the team’s future. "Pierre Gasly is an established driver and is under contract until 2028, while Franco Colapinto is making great progress," Provost commented.
The Frenchman also commended executive advisor Flavio Briatore, who plays a vital role in Alpine’s restructuring efforts. "I have a great relationship with him," Provost shared. "I appreciate him coming in at a challenging time two years ago. He made significant changes. Everything is going well."
Additionally, Provost welcomed Alpine’s title sponsorship agreement with Gucci for 2027 and beyond, describing it as "great news." "For a major luxury brand to become the primary sponsor of an F1 team is unprecedented," he said.
After Renault decided to end its own engine program to become a Mercedes customer team for 2026, Provost did not shy away from expressing the importance of prioritizing results over sentiment. "Renault has a legendary history with over 40 years in F1," he remarked. "But ultimately, I expect performance and thus aim to win."
