The provost emphasizes that Renault will be in Formula 1 'for a long time.'
Renault CEO Francois Provost has sought to reassure Formula 1 regarding the carmaker’s long-term commitment to the sport amidst ongoing doubts about the team's ownership structure. The team, based in Enstone, has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks and months, particularly following the collapse of negotiations with Mercedes over Otro Capital’s 24 percent stake, along with Renault’s reported reluctance to collaborate again with former Red Bull chief Christian Horner. Additionally, Chinese automotive giant BYD has been associated with a potential future Formula 1 project.
However, in an interview with RTBF, Provost emphasized that Renault views Formula 1 as a crucial aspect of its future, stating, "We’re going to be in F1 for a long time." He noted that Formula 1 is the most widely followed sport globally, with an audience of 800 million to 1 billion people.
Provost, who took over from Luca de Meo at Renault, expressed optimism about Alpine's recovery after a challenging phase, having finished last in the constructors’ championship in 2025. "When I was appointed, I asked the team to stabilize, and gradually everything is aligning," he remarked. "I can perceive the new dynamic."
He also expressed support for Alpine’s current driver lineup, highlighting that Pierre Gasly is contracted until 2028 and Franco Colapinto is increasingly seen as a part of the team’s future. "Pierre Gasly is a seasoned driver and is under contract until 2028, while Franco Colapinto is making significant progress," Provost noted.
The Frenchman praised executive advisor Flavio Briatore, a key figure in Alpine’s rebuilding efforts, saying, "I have a great relationship with him. I appreciate his involvement during our tough times two years ago; he helped turn things around. Everything is functioning well."
Provost also welcomed Alpine’s title sponsorship agreement with Gucci for 2027 and beyond, referring to it as "great news." He remarked, "It’s a first for a major luxury brand to be the main sponsor of an F1 team."
After Renault decided to discontinue its engine program in favor of becoming a Mercedes customer team for 2026, Provost expressed no regret for prioritizing results over sentiment. "Renault is part of the legend with over 40 years in F1," he stated. "But above all, I expect performance, so my goal is to win."
