Haas decided not to implement the new Ferrari suspension for 2025.
Haas has decided to develop its own front suspension for the 2025 car instead of purchasing Ferrari’s entirely new pullrod design. The small American team had an unusual pre-season test in Bahrain, choosing not to focus on performance runs and instead running slower than their rivals with heavy fuel loads. Team principal Ayao Komatsu commented, "Our new car maintains the positive aspects of the previous model." With this in mind, he expressed that aiming for faster lap times was unnecessary. "What does it matter to me if I know today whether we’re fifth or eighth?" the Japanese executive stated. "I can’t do anything until Melbourne because we won’t have any new components by then."
A significant change for Haas in 2025 is that the team will fully utilize the budget cap for the first time. "We know where we want to allocate the additional funds, but we have to learn how to implement it," Komatsu said, as reported by Auto Motor und Sport. "We will have around 350 employees and still stay within the budget cap, but that’s inefficient. Other teams manage to have 900 employees and remain under the limit."
"We still need to figure out how to spend our funds effectively—for instance, how many parts we should purchase at a fixed price and how many we should manufacture in-house." Regarding the suspension, Haas has sourced the rear layout entirely from Ferrari for their 2025 model, but they have created their own front suspension. "The timing of receiving data from Ferrari for the front would have been too late," Komatsu explained. "We would have lost too much time in aerodynamic development. Overall, that would have placed us at a disadvantage."
He noted that the situation is quite different for the rear end. "The (Ferrari) rear provides a significant benefit to the car," Komatsu acknowledged. "It was clear that we would procure it from Ferrari." As a result of the decisions made by Haas for the 2025 car, the vehicle now looks markedly different from the original Ferrari design, including altered nose, front wing, sidepods, and cooling configuration.
