Max Verstappen: You can't race in Monaco.
Max Verstappen finished fourth in Monaco. The reigning world champion was not thrilled with the idea of two mandatory pit stops and jokingly suggested borrowing ideas from the Mario Kart computer game to enhance the entertainment.
The second Red Bull Racing driver, Yuki Tsunoda, finished seventeenth and did not earn any points. On the seventh lap, Pierre Gasly crashed into Yuki while braking in front of Chicane at the exit of the tunnel.
Max Verstappen (4th): "It's impossible to race in Monaco, no matter what you do – one pit stop or ten pit stops. I was in the lead until the last lap, and by that time my tires were no longer holding up the track, but no one could overtake me anyway. Nowadays, only Formula 2 cars can be overtaken on the Monaco circuit while driving Formula 1.
I do not know what can be done to improve racing in Monaco. Perhaps we can borrow ideas from Mario Kart – install various devices on cars or scatter bananas along the highway. We need slippery asphalt!
I had nothing to lose because we had a big gap in the top three. If I had made four pit stops, I would still have finished in the same position. This is the Monaco circuit – qualifying is very important here. If nothing bad happens in the race, you don't have the opportunity to win back positions. That's exactly what happened today.
In any case, the car didn't have the speed to compete with the leaders under normal conditions. The tyres were very granular, so I consider fourth place to be the maximum we could have achieved."
Yuki Tsunoda (17th): "I do not know if the car was damaged or not by a blow from Pierre. Everything felt fine. At least I was able to reach the finish line. If there was any damage, it wasn't too much.
The team tried to play with the strategy, considering my start from the twelfth place, but it was not possible to do anything more. I have to do a better job of qualifying."
