Ellison is concerned about the technical reliability situation.
The Mercedes team spent a series of three races in a row, which ended last weekend in Barcelona, so poorly that they dropped from 2nd place in the Constructors' Cup to third, passing ahead of Ferrari. Moreover, in Imola, Monaco and on the Catalan circuit, she scored fewer points than Racing Bulls.
James Ellison, Mercedes technical director, spoke about these failures after the Spanish Grand Prix.
"If we recall these three stages, we could not have expected failures of fully proven car components, nothing foreshadowed this," Ellison said, referring to Kimi Antonelli's gatherings in Imola and Barcelona. – Let's hope that luck will be on our side in the future.… But even more important is another conclusion we made after these races: in the first two, we took a completely wrong approach to setting up the car.
We put too much load on the rear axle, which caused us serious problems, so we were already preparing for Barcelona in a different way. And on this track we were already more like ourselves, but if we had used the same approaches as in Imola and Monaco, our tires would simply not have held up.
Therefore, now we know how to act, and we will try to develop this approach in the upcoming stages. I think that's a positive thing.
" Of course, Ellison is concerned about the technical reliability situation that led to Antonelli's two meetings and George Russell's problems during qualifying in Monaco. But if the wiring problems associated with the engine, as in this case, or the malfunction of the accelerator pedal sensor on Kimi's car in Imola could have been fixed, then the engine failure on the Mercedes of the Italian debutant last weekend is a much more serious problem.
Apparently, in Canada, his car will have to be replaced. the engine, which increases the likelihood of fines at a later stage of the season. Mercedes does not yet know the reasons for the engine failure, and now this power plant has already been delivered to Brackley, where the team's engineers will have to figure it out.
"Next weekend we can put a new engine on the car, there will be no sanctions for this, since we have not yet exceeded the number of engines that can be used without penalties,– commented the technical director of Mercedes. – But so far, only a third of the season is over or a little more. And if we want to try to make it to the end of the year, it will increase the load on the remaining power plants.
We will have to monitor the use of the remaining resources very carefully – of course, there is nothing good when the engine fails before the end of the planned operating cycle."
