They went out: I am most proud of my victory in Monza in 2020!

The official website of the championship called a series of interviews in which well-known representatives of the Formula 1 world answer approximately the same questions, only partially related to motorsport, "Getting to know what (he) really is." Recently, Charles Leclair was the hero of such an interview and called Pierre Gasly his best friend among the drivers of modern Formula 1.

Now it was Pierre's turn to answer similar questions.

Question: Can you describe yourself in three words?

Pierre Gasly: Oh, it's starting! You ask such questions, but OK, let's just say that, of course, competitive is the first thing that comes to mind. Honest. And able to win! All this makes me strive for success.

Question: What made you fall in love with Formula 1?Pierre Gasly: First of all, speed and adrenaline. I still remember the feeling I had when I first got behind the wheel of a kart. I was six years old at the time, and everything was happening in Normandy, not far from home. Even now, if I close my eyes, I can see myself driving out of the pit lane onto the track for the first time, accelerating in a straight line, hitting the grass, because this is the first time I'm driving a cart and trying to find trajectories and all that.

I remember well this mixture of excitement, fear and adrenaline. It was a real cocktail of emotions! I had enjoyed watching Formula 1 on TV before, but only then did I really feel the speed.…

Question: Since when did you pass the driver's license exam?Pierre Gasly: I passed this exam on my birthday! I don't know, maybe something has changed now, but then you could only apply for a driver's license from the moment you turned 18. So I asked for an exam to be scheduled for February 7th, my birthday.

I think it took about half an hour for all the checks, and for the first ten minutes the examiner asked me questions about Formula 1. I was already a reserve driver then, and he told me, "Okay, we'll skip the rest! You're free, it's okay!" So it was pretty simple. Although I have to admit, this examiner was the father of a guy I used to race with, and he knew me.

Question: When was the last time you cried with laughter?Pierre Gasly: Among my best friends, there is one with whom this happens all the time. Maybe a couple of times a week. So it must have been a few days ago!

Q: Who is your best friend in the paddock?Pierre Gasly: I will name Charles Leclair, because I have known him for many years. And for me, Yuki Tsunoda is almost like a younger brother who is gradually maturing. Now (at Red Bull Racing) he has to solve difficult tasks.

And if we talk about Charles, then not only we know each other well, but our parents too. We had great times outside of the race tracks, and when we were kids, we competed together. But it is thanks to motorsport that we have developed this sincere and very strong relationship.

Question: Which three people from the world of Formula 1 who have ever lived, or our contemporaries, would you invite to a gala dinner and why?Pierre Gasly: First of all, James Hunt! He was a man who lived his life to the fullest and probably had a chance to learn a lot more than the average Formula 1 driver.…

Ayrton Senna, because, of course, he is a legendary racer, who was my idol, and whom I wanted to look up to as a child. If I named Senna, then I should have called Alain Prost. But we know each other pretty well, and I've had the opportunity to talk to Alain more than once, so I think I'll name Juan Manuel Fangio.

Anyway, it's Fangio, James Hunt and Ayrton Senna!

Question: And if you had to choose one racer to go with him to a desert island, who would it be and why?Pierre Gasly: I thought of Kimi Raikkonen because he doesn't talk much – at least we won't argue! (laughs) But if I had to choose someone else, I would prefer to invite Charles. It will be more fun with him! Or Yuki, because he's a great cook. At least from time to time I will have both lunch and lunch.

Question: How many languages do you speak? And are there any foreign languages that you would like to learn?

Pierre Gasly: I am French, but in life I have to speak English more. In general, I know French, English, Italian, and basic Spanish at the school curriculum level. And I know some Portuguese words.

I would say that I speak three languages quite fluently, and I use the other two when traveling. At least in Spain I can order beer, and they understand me!

Q: Do you have a favorite movie or TV series?Pierre Gasly: When I was a kid, I loved Harry Potter movies. It's a fabulous story, and thanks to it, I was immersed in some other world, which was very pleasant. And now I'm watching TV shows, and I like it.

In fact, I really liked "The Last Dance" about Michael Jordan, because it combines documentary footage shot in the past with interviews recorded relatively recently, and now he's talking about something he couldn't talk about at the time.

I've always been a big fan of his, so this is probably my favorite series.

Question: What was the best advice you've ever received?Pierre Gasly: I think I'll recall the words of Jean Alesi, which he told me when I was still involved in karting: we need to move forward gradually, step by step. It's clear that we always dream of something great, we all have big ambitions, but he said this at the time:

"Before setting yourself an ultimate goal, really focus on the tasks that need to be solved here and now. When this is done, then you take the next step, trying to understand what needs to be done in order to achieve the maximum possible result. You'll eventually achieve what you're aiming for."

I remember that it was in Monaco when I was probably 13 years old, and at that age it was difficult to really understand the meaning of his words, but later I understood their meaning.

It's very simple, but we're always worried about the question, what's next? In the end, we need to enjoy what is happening right now, and be able to enjoy what we have. In my opinion, it's all very simple, but very important.

Question: Is there any profession that you are interested in and that you would like to change your job to for one day?Pierre Gasly: Um... I'm attracted to space, so I guess it's an astronaut's profession. Although you can't fly far in one day! But I really like doing interior design – it can also be my choice.

But many times I dreamed of taking part in the final match of the Champions League, and that there would be a full house in the stands of the stadium – so that there would be a hundred thousand spectators!

Even as a trader on Wall Street, sometimes I want to become a day trader – the adrenaline level attracts me in this activity.

Q: What is your most proud achievement in Formula 1?Pierre Gasly: Victory at Monza in 2020! This is my first victory in Formula 1, and that race was the highlight of my career.

Question: What would you like to do in five years?Pierre Gasly: In five years, I would like to become world champion. To be honest, this is my only goal, and the rest is of little interest to me.
