Stella: You have to admit that Max and Red Bull were faster.

Andrea Stella acknowledged that in Las Vegas McLaren couldn’t keep up with Max Verstappen, but Lando Norris’s second place was perfectly acceptable to the British team.

Andrea Stella: “I think we have to admit that Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing were a bit quicker, although, of course, it would have been interesting to see how things would have developed if Lando had kept the lead and been on a clear track.

But to be honest, Max was faster than us in all conditions, so at some stage of the race we decided that second place was a fairly good result given the situation in the World Championship.

At the start Lando tried to defend his position, but, in my view, the grip on the inside of the track was worse than he expected. Still, that’s racing — in that incident we also lost a position to George Russell. But I repeat, I’m not sure we could have stayed in first place considering the pace Verstappen showed today.

When it became clear that second place was guaranteed, we decided to be more conservative and simply bring the car home, but we will try to make full use of our car’s speed in the final two races of the season.

As for Oscar, in the remaining races he only needs wins, and then it will become clear how big his chances for the title are. He has a fighting spirit and will try to win both, but clearly you can already start doing the mathematical calculations of those chances.

In any case, we’re in for an exciting end to the season — Max, Lando, Oscar and many other drivers will be preparing for the next race aiming to fight for the win, so we’ll see what awaits us in Qatar.”
