Hamilton: this is how racing ought to be.
Hamilton and Verstappen 'causing a stir' - Steiner
Lewis Hamilton has expressed that he is finding more enjoyment in Formula 1 than ever amid the contentious 2026 regulations, despite ongoing disapproval from Max Verstappen. While Verstappen has consistently criticized the new era for its significant focus on energy management and lift-and-coast strategies, Hamilton claims that the racing experience is reminiscent of his early karting days. "If you look back to karting, it’s just the same - it oscillates back and forth," he remarked. "This is what racing should be - not just one move and that’s the end of it." The divergent opinions have ignited discussions throughout the paddock, with former Haas team principal Gunther Steiner suggesting that both athletes might be influenced by competition and politics rather than by core principles. "I’m sure they are both trying to create some controversy," Steiner commented to Sport Bild. "They certainly take note of what the drivers say, but ultimately, it's the FIA and the teams that collaboratively determine the regulations - not the drivers." Steiner highlighted the current competitive landscape as a significant factor. "Hamilton is in a much better position this year and has a competitive car - that’s why he feels satisfied. If Verstappen were back at the front, he would likely view the rules differently," he added.
