Verstappen ignites German enthusiasm as F1 makes its comeback.
Pirelli has moved a scheduled tyre test to a different location.
Max Verstappen's increasing popularity at the Nurburgring is generating heightened interest in Germany, coinciding with the return of Formula 1 to the historic circuit due to changes in the calendar. According to Auto Motor und Sport, the organisers of the Nurburgring 24 Hours have had to turn away entries for the first time in several years, as all 150 grid spots have now been filled. This surge in demand is directly attributed to Verstappen’s participation in GT3 racing at the famous Nordschleife. "As announced by the organiser, ADAC Nordrhein, it is already confirmed that all 150 starting places will be occupied," the report stated. "The excitement surrounding the four-time world champion has led to a significant influx of interested teams." Officials have confirmed that entries will now be assessed and some will be declined. "To ensure a fair process for all teams, the regulations require a review and selection to happen after the entry deadline," stated a spokesperson for ADAC Nordrhein. The event is also anticipated to draw a notably larger audience, with eight major manufacturers—including Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, and Mercedes-AMG—expected to enter GT3 teams.
At the same time, Formula 1 is making a return to the Nurburgring, although not in the limelight. With races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cancelled due to the Iran crisis, Pirelli has shifted a planned tyre test to the German circuit on April 14-15. Both Mercedes and McLaren will participate, unusually fielding their complete race teams instead of reserve drivers. Therefore, championship leader Kimi Antonelli and George Russell will be on track along with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. "The reasoning is clear—firstly, the regular drivers need to gain mileage. Secondly, the drivers must continue to get accustomed to their new cars," the German publication noted. However, fans eager to watch will be let down. "Spectators are not allowed at the private Pirelli test at the Nurburgring," the report highlighted, as the tyre supplier aims to keep its 2027 developments confidential.
