Button at Goodwood pilots the championship BGP 001.
This weekend at Goodwood, Jenson Button is participating in the annual Goodwood Racing Club (GRRC) meeting, including demonstration laps in the Brawn BGP 001 car, with which he won the championship title in 2009.
We reported that only three such chassis were built at that time, and now all three historic cars that became a sensation in Formula 1 in 2009 have been gathered at Goodwood for the first time.
"I always come to Goodwood, and now I'm driving my Brawn car, with which I won the championship, so of course, I feel very strong emotions," Jenson shared after another lap. "The impressions are incredible, because usually I race historic sports cars on this track, so when I drove out on a Formula 1 car, I initially experienced some shock!
But overall, the feeling behind the wheel is absolutely natural – I feel much more comfortable in the BGP 001 than in any other car I drive here. However, when I tried to take the corners at full throttle, the engine lost power sharply a couple of times – I don't know, maybe some safety mode was activated. In general, because of this, I couldn't attack at full strength throughout the lap, but it still feels like these cars are insanely fast.
For me, this is a wonderful opportunity to remember the past, as this car holds a very important place in my life, and it's really great that Ross Brawn allowed me to drive it again! I won the championship in 2009 with it, then participated in demonstration events at Silverstone in 2019, but I really enjoy performing here at Goodwood.
I believe people have somewhat forgotten that these were special cars, including how those V8 engines sound – and what could be better than taking it out on the track at Goodwood! By the way, in the next laps, I will go even faster!"
