Heidfeld introduces a new series 'beneath Formula E.'
"Below Formula E? There’s nothing established yet"
Former Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld is making a comeback in motorsport with a new position as co-founder of an all-electric junior racing series set to debut in 2027. In an interview with Blick, the German stated that a "new phase" of his life has begun after stepping away from racing to prioritize family. "Following my career, I primarily wanted to be at home more. But now the children are aged 15, 18, and 20," he mentioned. "A new chapter in my life is starting."
This chapter involves assisting in the creation of the FG Series, which aims to establish a developmental pathway beneath Formula E. "Below Formula 1, there’s the established pyramid of Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4," Heidfeld stated. "But underneath Formula E? There’s nothing in place yet."
The initiative, launched in collaboration with former Formula E team manager Dilbagh Gill, aims to address one of motorsport's major challenges – costs. "We aim to make motorsport more accessible and provide drivers with comprehensive training for what lies ahead," he explained.
A significant innovation is a franchise-style approach where the cars are owned by the series and leased to the teams. "This permits one car to be utilized by two different drivers across two separate series on the same weekend, which reduces expenses," Heidfeld noted. The concept also strongly emphasizes sustainability. "Transporting by ship and land, without relying on costly air freight," he outlined, discussing the strategy of conducting seasons across various regions instead of constant global travel.
Nonetheless, securing funding continues to be the biggest challenge. "So far, my co-founder and I have covered the majority of the costs ourselves. However, to truly launch the project, we require additional investors. We’re looking at several million," admitted Heidfeld, 48. "Even with some savings, it's too much for us to finance independently."
