The FIA plans to switch Formula 1 to V8 in 2030.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced the timeline for the return of V8 engines to Formula 1.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem: "It will happen. It will definitely happen. It's just a matter of time.
In 2031, FIA will have the right to do this without any votes from the manufacturers. That's the regulation. But we want to replace the engines a year earlier, which is what everyone is asking us for now. The manufacturers are against it, but the decision is up to FIA.
Let's not discuss the technical side for now; let's talk about the task. The task will be much less complicated than it is now. When the regulations allowed the use of MGU-H, none of the manufacturers benefited from it in the real world. Now we are effectively using the same 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, just with MGU-K.
I would like to bring back the V10, but currently, car manufacturers are not producing cars with that engine. The most popular and straightforward engine in operation is the V8. It's lightweight, uncomplicated, and has a good sound. The hybrid component will remain, but it will be minimal. Not like now, when the ratio is about 46-54. The power of the electric motor will be small.
V8 engines are in road cars from Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac. You see them with most manufacturers. And that is our choice.
I want to push this decision in 2030. If the manufacturers do not support it, they will have a year to prepare, as in 2031 we will do this without their consent. I do not need their support."
