F2 champion Fornaroli aims for an F1 seat with support from McLaren.
Leonardo Fornaroli expresses his aspiration to join Formula 1 full-time next year after starting his trackside duties with McLaren. The 21-year-old Italian, who claimed the 2025 Formula 2 championship, is now serving as a reserve and development driver for McLaren under team principal Andrea Stella. Fornaroli mentioned to Corriere della Sera that he will be attending grands prix this season and is also set to take part in selected FP1 sessions.
"I’m feeling great," he shared. "McLaren knows how to support young drivers in their development." He added, "Testing, preparation, and the simulator work are all progressing well." Recently, he drove McLaren’s 2023 car at Silverstone as a part of his preparation. "It had been quite a while since I last drove a racing car, so the initial laps were a surprise," Fornaroli admitted. "What impressed me the most was the braking power and the ability to maintain speed through fast corners. I was left speechless."
Currently, much of his effort is concentrated on simulator development for Formula 1's contentious 2026 regulations. "Before every race weekend, I conduct simulator sessions, following the same program as the race drivers," he explained. "There's a lot to learn about the usage of electrical energy." Fornaroli also mentioned that he is receiving guidance directly from Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. "They provide me with support in every way possible," he noted. "And I strive to offer my contributions in return."
When asked about his future goals, Fornaroli was straightforward. "I hope to be in Formula 1 next year," he stated. "However, there are also other intriguing opportunities. IndyCar and Hypercar are both very attractive." Furthermore, Fornaroli hopes to soon race alongside his fellow countryman Kimi Antonelli, who is currently leading the world championship for Mercedes, in Formula 1. "I hope to compete with Kimi as soon as I can," he said. "It’s a remarkable time for Italian motorsport."
