Verstappen's team is seeking a decision on the future 'soon.'
Fresh uncertainty regarding Max Verstappen’s future is continuing to rise as Red Bull faces both performance challenges and increasing questions about its future without Dr. Helmut Marko. The latest development emerged after Ralf Schumacher suggested that Mercedes had made an offer to Verstappen, although it was described as financially unattractive and "completely out of the question." This led to a swift reaction from Verstappen’s team.
"Ralf, once again you present incorrect information," Jos Verstappen commented on Instagram under the Sky Deutschland post featuring the remarks. This dialogue occurs amid ongoing speculation following Verstappen’s recent meeting in Salzburg with Red Bull's senior management. According to journalist Erik van Haren from De Telegraaf, Verstappen did not commit his future to Red Bull during those discussions, despite the impending activation window for his performance-related exit clauses.
Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has suggested that the uncertainty may be resolved soon. "We want a decision to be made quickly so that everyone understands their position," he told Sport Bild. "It could happen before the summer break." Vermeulen emphasized that Verstappen is still open to spending his remaining career at Red Bull, noting, "We have a contract until 2028."
He acknowledged the presence of release clauses, stating, "These have always existed, but we’ve never acted on one. Our loyalty has been unwavering, and it will continue." However, he also made it clear that competitiveness is a crucial factor. "We aim to continue our partnership with Red Bull and see Max conclude his career here, but of course, with the opportunity to win."
Speculation about Verstappen’s future has intensified as Red Bull struggles to keep pace with Mercedes and Ferrari for 2026. Reports are even suggesting that McLaren’s Oscar Piastri could be a candidate for a potential vacancy should Verstappen choose to leave. Schumacher opines that some of Red Bull’s current challenges can be traced back to the departure of long-time advisor Dr. Helmut Marko at the conclusion of last season.
"It’s quite chaotic behind the scenes," the German said. "I’ve heard that many are only now realizing the extent of Helmut Marko’s contributions." Schumacher noted that Marko's influence went far beyond driver development. "He was instrumental in uniting various elements of the organization— from the Austrian division of the company to the team in England and everything in between. Much more transpired behind the scenes thanks to him than many realized."
Meanwhile, comments from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff after the Barcelona race have continued to stir discussions regarding the team’s future driver strategies. Wolff expressed regret over allowing George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to compete against each other while Lewis Hamilton secured a victory. "When facing a real rival like Ferrari in the championship, you sometimes need to let the faster driver through," he remarked. "I genuinely believe Kimi could have won." Instead, Mercedes permitted both drivers to race unrestrictedly. "We let them race," Wolff explained, estimating a resulting loss of "probably five or six seconds."
