Briatore suggests a future with Alpine for Gasly and Colapinto.
"I strive to give my best every single time."
Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto seem increasingly likely to remain Alpine's race drivers for 2027. Amid rumors linking Fernando Alonso to a potential return to the Enstone-based team, executive advisor Flavio Briatore hinted before the Austrian GP that he intends to keep the current lineup. Briatore characterized Gasly as one of the top six drivers on the Formula 1 grid and mentioned a final decision would be made around the summer break. Gasly, who recently received the third-place trophy from the Monaco GP after successfully appealing a pitlane speeding issue, appreciated Briatore’s support.
"I believe I am," Gasly responded with a smile when asked about Briatore’s remarks. "It's nice to hear it from Flavio, but I've been around long enough to understand that I must concentrate on my own performance. I aim to be the best I can every single time I'm in the car, and sometimes that translates to a 15th place finish like last year. It doesn't mean I'm a bad driver. Flavio's support is appreciated, and we're working well together, so I'm pleased with our team dynamic and hope we can improve our performance even further."
Colapinto, who has experienced both support and criticism from Briatore during his time at Alpine, indicated that their relationship remains strong. "I caught a bit of what he said," the Argentine driver remarked at the Red Bull Ring. "His comments were very positive, and the interview was quite enjoyable. Flavio is very supportive and has been strict with me at times, but it was necessary. How I deal with those moments matters, and fortunately, I've managed them well, improved, and learned from them; they've been incredibly helpful."
He went on to say, "Everyone knows Flavio has been in this sport for many years and has seen great success, so leveraging his experience and feedback to improve, understand where to focus, and build mental strength proves to be very beneficial. Over time, it becomes a strength." When asked about the timeline for a decision on 2027, Colapinto replied, "We haven't talked about the 2027 outlook yet, as our focus is entirely on each race one at a time."
