Wolff emphasizes that he never made a claim regarding Ferrari 'cheating'.
Toto Wolff has responded to Ferrari's team principal Frederic Vasseur following their growing public dispute regarding Formula 1's budget cap. Vasseur claimed at Silverstone that Wolff had practically accused Ferrari of "cheating" when he questioned how the Maranello team managed to implement so many upgrades during the 2026 season. The Frenchman also acknowledged that the disagreement had put a strain on their long-standing friendship. However, Wolff maintained that his remarks had been misinterpreted.
"Fred needs to read the entire story, not just the headlines," he told Sky Deutschland after qualifying at Silverstone. "Then he will grasp what I meant. He shouldn’t take it so personally." The Mercedes team principal denied implying that Ferrari was violating financial regulations. "No, not at all. I mentioned that they will likely have to limit the updates eventually since a lot of work has already been done on the car. There’s no question of cheating."
Wolff did, however, admit that Vasseur's response had not completely caught him off guard. "That’s merely a factual statement. But Fred can become quite easily angered. I know that to be true; I've known him for 25 years." When asked if this exchange had harmed their friendship, Wolff replied, "We are fundamentally competitors here, and there are times when things are easier and times when they are more challenging." This latest exchange occurs as Ferrari has emerged as Mercedes’ nearest rival in 2026, with Charles Leclerc making a timely comeback at Silverstone after qualifying alongside polesitter Kimi Antonelli.
"I’m happy for Charles; he was under pressure," Vasseur told Sky Italia. Leclerc admitted he had recently faced a decision between adapting to Lewis Hamilton’s driving style or sticking to his own. "I chose the latter approach, sticking with what I know has worked for me in the past and trying to find a way to make it work with the car and the tools I have available," he said. "But I want to emphasize that this is just one qualifying session. It doesn’t mean my season will change from now on."
