Bearman suggested a potential scenario if Verstappen departs from Red Bull.
"Carlos Sainz is another good driver."
Ralf Schumacher believes that Oliver Bearman would be Red Bull's top pick if Max Verstappen decides to leave, and he also suggested that the recent high-profile meeting between Verstappen’s management and Dr. Helmut Marko was likely more about Verstappen’s future rather than a move to bring Marko back. With rampant speculation regarding Verstappen’s future, Schumacher was asked who Red Bull should consider if the four-time champion departs. "If it's possible to get him, my first choice would be Oliver Bearman, especially if they’re unsure about relying on Hadjar," he shared with Sky Deutschland. "Then there’s Carlos Sainz, who is a strong driver. The only drawback is that he hasn’t yet demonstrated he can contend for the championship, but Sainz has performed well." Schumacher stated that Bearman possesses all the qualities needed to thrive at the front of Formula 1. "If Hamilton has just one more year left, then the question arises as to why they would let such a valuable asset go," he remarked.
He also commented on Oscar Piastri, who has been linked with Red Bull amid ongoing speculation concerning Verstappen and McLaren. "I see Piastri more in the Carlos Sainz category - and he has evolved," Schumacher noted. "I believe he was somewhat affected by the discord within the team last year, and it didn’t help that he felt he lacked the same resources as his teammate. That had an impact on him, and it's evident he's not entirely content at this moment." However, Schumacher advised Verstappen to avoid being consumed by the ongoing transfer discussions. "He must be cautious not to lose himself," he cautioned.
He expressed skepticism that the recent meeting in Amsterdam involving Jos Verstappen, manager Vermeulen, and former Red Bull adviser Marko was aimed at bringing the 83-year-old back into Formula 1. "I can’t envision that," he said when asked about a possible return for Marko. "I think he’s quite satisfied with his current situation. While it may not have been an easy decision, he has come to terms with it."
Schumacher believes that Red Bull has already progressed under Laurent Mekies' leadership. "Dr. Marko has valuable experience, but he is also not the youngest," he remarked. "Everything has changed. Mekies is now in charge, and I think they are focusing on different people." Nonetheless, he feels that Verstappen’s camp is starting to realize just how crucial Marko was behind the scenes, having "underestimated" his role.
Schumacher indicated that the Amsterdam meeting was noteworthy. "If it had just involved Max’s father, I would have thought, ‘Fine, maybe they’ll just have a cup of coffee,’" he said. "But with the three of them—his manager, his father, and then in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands—it takes on a different significance." Rather than discussing a potential return for Marko, Schumacher suspects that the meeting revolved around Verstappen’s future plans. "Perhaps it was a discussion about how he views the situation," he suggested. "Is there another opportunity ahead? What should we do at Red Bull? That seems much more plausible to me."
