      Los chicos de Edison Motors tienen algo especial entre manos. No sólo han construido varios camiones semirremolque diésel-eléctricos con hibridación en serie, sino que ahora también tienen un par de camionetas. Estos vehículos —una Ram de segunda generación y un Toyota Land Cruiser de la serie 79— sirven como pruebas de concepto para los próximos kits de conversión de la compañía canadiense. La idea es que, con el hardware de Edison, cualquier pickup construido en las últimas seis décadas pueda convertirse para funcionar con un tren motriz diésel-eléctrico.

      Chace Barber, presidente y cofundador de Edison, es un tipo muy listo. Lo entrevisté el año pasado para un vídeo en el canal de YouTube de The Drive, y quedé más que impresionado con su enfoque para fabricar maquinaria preparada para el futuro que incorpora la electrificación de forma realista.       Ambas construcciones montan bajo el capó un motor Cummins de crate de 2,8 litros. Ese cuatro cilindros se pone en marcha y acciona un generador montado en la parte trasera. Desde ahí, la electricidad se alimenta a una batería montada entre los largueros del chasis y, finalmente, llega a un par de ejes eléctricos que proporcionan par instantáneo a las ruedas en lugar de enviarlo a través de una caja de transferencia. Es realmente elegante, y como puedes ver en estos clips, ofrece lo mejor de ambos mundos: funcionamiento silencioso en modo eléctrico y autonomía auto-reabastecida gracias al diésel de pequeña cilindrada disponible bajo demanda.

      Estos kits aún están en desarrollo, así que espera que algunos componentes se vean diferentes cuando lleguen a producción. Toma por ejemplo el sistema de refrigeración para vehículos eléctricos montado en la caja del Land Cruiser; están trabajando para hacerlo lo suficientemente compacto como para caber debajo de la caja y que siga siendo tan utilizable como una camioneta de fábrica. Para lo que valga, la caja de la Ram de segunda generación está totalmente libre de cualquier elemento de ese tipo, y nunca sabrías que es un híbrido en serie sin ver los ejes eléctricos.

      Edison no está tomando atajos con sus camiones, ya que trabaja con empresas nacionales y proveedores globales para hacer productos reales y accesibles para la gente que los quiere y los necesita. No diría eso de cualquier startup en internet, tampoco, ya que hay suficientes que generan bombo sólo para conseguir capital. Barber y compañía han admitido más de una vez cuando una idea no funcionó, lo cual es raro en este sector. Pero no hace falta que te lo diga.

      Lo que están haciendo es genuinamente inteligente: toman tecnología como los trenes motrices híbridos en serie, que se han usado en locomotoras durante más de 100 años, y la aplican a los camiones. También están dispuestos a pivotar; según Barber, están considerando vender su propio chasis rodante con los trenes motrices electrificados ya instalados, de modo que lo único que quede por hacer sea colocar una carrocería de pickup encima.
