A month before the end of the season the fight starts again. McLaren's drivers arrived in Brazil separated by a single point in Lando Norris's favor, and any one of the four remaining races (two of them with a Saturday sprint) could prove decisive. The third title contender, Max Verstappen of Red Bull, trails the leader by 36 points, and to catch up with Piastri and Norris he would have to make up nine points on them in each race. The task is almost impossible — but not for Max. He has repeatedly shown that in a title fight he is willing to do anything and cares nothing for conventions. The three are almost the same age. Piastri is 24, Norris is now 25, and Verstappen recently turned 28. Piastri is a bright star. It is extremely rare even for the best to win championship titles in Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 2 on the first try in successive years, as Oscar did in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In 2022 Alpine and McLaren even had a small battle over the young driver, which was only resolved by the Contract Recognition Board, confirming his move to McLaren, where he made his Formula 1 debut in 2023. Since then Piastri has always been among the most consistent. In 2025 Oscar led for most of the season purely on pace, hardly taking part in incidents. He also has the fewest penalty points of the three. Briton Lando Norris is a year and a half older. In a week he'll turn 26. He performed very well in karting and Formula Renault, winning his last junior title in European F3 in 2017, and he was not champion in the higher categories, losing out in Formula 2 to George Russell. He debuted at McLaren in 2019 alongside Carlos Sainz — in qualifying he beat his teammate by almost the same margin, 11–10 — he was already quick on Saturdays then, but the Spaniard raced better and scored more points. Norris likes talking to the press and often praises his rivals, which is unusual. Verstappen did relatively little racing in the junior categories. He became champion in Formula Masters in 2014, and then Helmut Marko took him under the Red Bull banner, and the rest of his career unfolded before our eyes. Four championship titles and a mature age for a driver — the Dutchman is already 28 — give him good chances, also because Red Bull Racing is the strongest team of the last decade. The departures of Newey and other strong leaders have somewhat weakened the team, but for now they continue moving very well on momentum. But McLaren does not stand fully behind Oscar — they are playing a strange-for-Formula-1 game of equality. But real equality does not exist in Formula 1, nor do two identical cars. And this game has its own priorities too — of shareholders, owners, sponsors. But agreements about who should yield a position to whom because the other pitted first at the previous round — that's playing on the opponent's field, in which the team voluntarily gives up the initiative. One wants to believe that the title will still be won by whoever has the greater speed and the stronger nerves. And we will watch that with pleasure! For the fifth year the event has carried a city title rather than a national one — like in Mexico City. Finding funding at the local level turned out to be easier than at the state level. And there are fewer approvals, fewer taxes and fewer middlemen. And while the Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo for a number of reasons has always been on the verge of cancellation, the São Paulo Grand Prix is a fairly successful event. You can't call it respectable, given the remaining favelas around the track, but they are becoming fewer, and the Brazilian crowd is no less emotional than the Mexican one and understands Formula 1 better. The Brazilian round rarely goes without stories related to crime. Drivers and team staff have been robbed more than once, high-profile figures are given security, but you can't assign a police officer to every mechanic, so before leaving the circuit they change into inconspicuous clothes to blend in with the crowd and not reveal their connection to Formula 1. This season Formula 1 features a Brazilian driver again after a five-year break — Gabriel Bortoleto at Sauber — and last year's Formula 2 champion looks very respectable alongside the experienced Nico Hülkenberg. Next year it will be a factory Audi team, with which much higher ambitions can be set. Brazilians are sixth in the number of drivers who have competed in Formula 1 and third in the number of titles, behind only the British and the Germans. Brazilian drivers have taken part in the race since the first Brazilian Grand Prix. Emerson Fittipaldi, his brother Wilson and José Carlos Pace, after whom the Interlagos circuit is named, were followed by Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, then Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa arrived, then Pietro Fittipaldi showed promise, and now Brazilian spectators will cheer for a native of São Paulo — for Bortoleto this is a home race in every sense.
