A friend of mine, Mark, recently bought a new car, and he was reminiscing about a feature that seems to have vanished: the CD player. As we find ourselves in 2025, it turns out he was mistaken.

Over the weekend, I traveled to Aspen via Denver and spent some time in the 2025 Subaru Outback. I was surprised to discover a CD player in the center armrest of this new car, which only had a few thousand miles on it. Clearly, Mark should have opted for a Subaru Outback. Ironically, he was on his second Outback while searching for his latest vehicle and chose not to get a third. Perhaps that decision was questionable.

The 2025 Outback I drove was a high-end Touring XT model, which includes a CD player as standard in the center console storage. The lower-tier Touring model also comes with a standard CD player.

Even more surprising is that the Outback isn’t the only new car, or Subaru, still offering a CD player today.

Both the 2025 Lexus IS sedan and RC coupe feature a CD player mounted on the dashboard. The RC is set to be discontinued after 2025, while the IS is undergoing its third redesign as it enters the 2026 model year, both leading to the eventual removal of the CD player from the Lexus lineup.

As for Subaru? The Japanese automaker still provides a CD player as an option on the WRX. Regarding the Outback, it is about to be succeeded by a new generation for 2026, and Subaru informed The Drive that a CD player will not be available in that model.
