Will the FIA president ban the broadcasting of radio conversations?
Ahead of another round of tackling drivers' emotional remarks during on-track battles, the FIA president is determined. It all started when Mohammed Ben Sulayem compared drivers' vocabulary to "rappers" last year, causing Lewis Hamilton's displeasure and later receiving a response from the GPDA drivers' union in which they said the president should "watch his tone and language".
Speaking at the recent FIA summit in Spain, Ben Sulayem raised the subject again, saying that all options are being considered to combat it. One of his ideas is to completely abandon the transmission of radio conversations to the television airwaves, but here the FIA is encroaching on FOM territory - in premium subscription packages, any communication between drivers and pit lane is played back in real time, and if there are problems, the FIA is threatened with legal action.
Sulayem said in the winter that "it's not for the drivers to discuss his management methods", in response to which he was hinted that the non-profit federation should not interfere in commercial matters either. Sulayem's key phrase at this meeting, "We still own the championship", quite reveals the essence of the ongoing conflict between the FIA president and Formula 1.
