Voules: Carlos Sainz was another of our strategists
James Voules has a very sincere personality: when things were not going well for the team, as, for example, at the end of last season, he did not hide that he was upset, but if there is something to be happy about, then the head of Williams Racing rejoices truly sincerely.
Alex Albon finished fifth yesterday in Melbourne, earning 10 points at once – we can remind you that at the end of last season he had 12 points on his account. But Carlos Sainz was frankly unlucky, the race ended for him, in fact, before it even started.
Commenting on yesterday's events, Voules did not skimp on praising Alex, but he found the right words for the Spanish rider.
James Voules: "I'm just over the moon and I'm happy for both our whole team and Alex! He drove a great race and really deserved this result. Everything worked out great – the mechanics at the pit stops, the strategists, the engineers – but Carlos also helped us make decisions.
I'll tell you about this in more detail: he was another of our strategists, because during the race he was next to me on the pit wall, saw the picture on the radar screen, and his advice was extremely important.
He very accurately identified the moment when it was necessary to switch from slicks to intermediate tires. In general, Carlos helped us make aggressive decisions when choosing tactics, so that we could rise to higher positions.
It was a very difficult day for Carlos himself, considering the conditions in which the racers worked on the track. We still have to analyze everything in more detail, but he just put on a higher gear at a difficult moment on a very slippery track. It seems that because of this, the engine produced a slightly higher torque than we expected. Probably, the impact of this power surge has only intensified due to the fact that there are a lot of white lines on the asphalt on that section of the highway.
In general, it's all about nuances, and the team will have to work separately to ensure that, regardless of the circumstances, the stability of the most basic parameters that the riders have to deal with.
But now I'm looking forward to the race in China and all the other stages of the season. We have a good car that has performed well this weekend, and we need to ensure that it is the same in Shanghai and on other tracks."
