Wolff: Verstappen to Mercedes 'not relevant at the moment'

"The silly season kicks off early this year."

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is attempting to quell speculation that discussions with Max Verstappen for a partnership in 2026 and beyond are already underway. Former F1 racer Ralf Schumacher believes he's witnessing indications that the four-time world champion might invoke an exit clause and leave as the ongoing Red Bull crisis unfolds. "Max is understandably impatient," the German told Sky Deutschland. "I wouldn't want to be present for what occurs in that meeting," Schumacher chuckled. "And I wouldn't be shocked if there are negotiations happening behind the scenes. We'll see what transpires, but next year brings a completely new car and an entirely new engine. They can’t seem to get this current setup designed by Adrian Newey right."

Verstappen, currently 8 points behind Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, was not on the podium after the Chinese GP and nodded in response to Dutch reporters asking if he believes Red Bull is now the "fourth team" behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. "It seems that way," he replied. One reporter inquired if the 27-year-old was motivated to help improve Red Bull's situation. "Yes, and I hear these discussions continuously," he laughed. "For me, nothing changes. In fact, I'm very relaxed, very positive, and enjoying life. Every time I get in the car, I strive to do my best."

Reports indicate that Verstappen has been offered a hugely lucrative package to join Aston Martin, but Dutch journalist Jack Plooij believes a deal with Mercedes is practically finalized. "No comment," Wolff told Sky Deutschland in Shanghai when confronted with the latest rumors regarding Verstappen. "The silly season begins early this year, perhaps now. We support the decision we have made and our two drivers."

Wolff's 18-year-old protégé Kimi Antonelli is already making waves in Lewis Hamilton’s former race seat, having been voted 'driver of the day' on Sunday, despite George Russell securing a podium finish for the second time in the 2025 season. "Congratulations to him," Russell remarked upon hearing about Antonelli’s accolade. Nonetheless, 27-year-old Russell's contract is set for renewal this year, and many insiders believe that he, along with Verstappen, has essentially been the standout driver of 2025 thus far. "He is delivering remarkable performances," Wolff concurred, "and it’s astonishing how calm Kimi is driving at just 18 years old. So, nothing has changed."

However, when questioned about the possibility of signing Verstappen for 2026, Wolff replied: "That question is not pertinent right now. There is no exchange happening, and we stand by our drivers, both of whom are performing exceptionally."
