Absence of 'Newey effect' at Aston Martin is 'unexpected'
"I anticipated that Newey would provide a specific direction."
A former Formula 1 driver is taken aback that the 'Adrian Newey effect' has not yet manifested at Aston Martin. The renowned Red Bull design expert just began his role at Aston Martin a month ago, and it is widely known that his main focus is the 2026 project. Nonetheless, the team has recently activated a new, advanced wind tunnel. "It’s just getting started," Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa shared with DAZN, "and we haven’t had the opportunity to test any improvements yet. We'll need to be a bit more patient and see the enhancements come to the track."
Fernando Alonso conceded last weekend that Newey has not yet devised any "big ideas" for Aston Martin’s 2025 car, which is proving to be even less effective than the struggling 2024 model. Former Minardi driver Christijan Albers believes that the team's downturn since early 2023, despite substantial investments from owner Lawrence Stroll, is surprising. "You can't always remain at the top; it's constantly evolving," he said to De Telegraaf. "What shocks and surprises me is that there's seemingly no progress at Aston Martin anymore."
Albers feels that the month Newey has spent working should have already shown some impact. "I expected Newey to provide a certain direction, and that the car would improve," the Dutchman remarked. "When Dan Fallows transitioned to Aston Martin and replicated everything from Red Bull, they were immediately competitive. Suddenly, Fernando Alonso was finishing on the podium. So I had definite expectations - but that hasn’t happened."
