Sainz: An Alpine with a different engine would be in the front row.
At the last stage in Bahrain, Pierre Gasly showed fifth time in qualifying. Williams driver Carlos Sainz believes that if the Alpine car had had a different power plant than Renault, Gasly would have qualified in the front row.
Carlos Sainz: "The balance of power depends very much on the track. When the entire peloton fits into eight tenths, everything changes very quickly. It is clear that we will still come to tracks where Alpine will be very fast, but there will also be tracks suitable for Williams.
It's obvious to me that the Alpine car makes impressive turns. I don't know if you have access to GPS data, but it shows that they drove the sixth and eleventh turns in Bahrain as fast as the McLaren. They're good at all medium-speed turns, and that's impressive.
Pierre had an outstanding qualifying lap. And at the same time, they complain about the lack of three tenths due to the engine. If they had a Mercedes or Ferrari engine in their car, they would have qualified in the front row."
