Vasseur unleashes a tirade against Hamilton critic.
Frederic Vasseur could not contain his frustration as he criticized recent reports concerning Lewis Hamilton’s difficulties in acclimating to Ferrari. The seven-time world champion has yet to meet the pre-season expectations following his switch from Mercedes, with Ferrari's boss Vasseur even acknowledging as he left Jeddah, "He’s experiencing too many fluctuations." The supportive Italian media aligns with this view, as La Gazzetta dello Sport noted that Hamilton has thus far been "well below expectations."
Vasseur was particularly irritated by a journalist who questioned why he believes Hamilton’s performance has significantly declined in 2025. "Significantly?" Vasseur replied. "We have only completed five races! I understand you want a sensational headline saying 'Fred said this,' but that is absolute nonsense."
He emphasized that the "ups and downs" he previously mentioned are typical in motorsport and reiterated his commitment to assisting Hamilton in regaining his form. "I will support him 2000 percent," he insisted. "I’m not concerned at all. We’ll start finding solutions and will begin to identify the reasons."
Vasseur also remarked that Hamilton sometimes receives different scrutiny compared to other drivers. "I suspect you didn’t come to the same conclusion about Max (Verstappen) when he finished seventh last week." Regarding the journalist who faced his ire, Vasseur added, "You can do whatever you want. I won't lose sleep over you."
Nevertheless, the reporter is not the only one criticizing Hamilton, nor Vasseur. Renowned Italian F1 commentator Leo Turrini remarked on the performance of the 56-year-old French team principal: "Vasseur’s tally stands at one podium in five races. Is that sufficient? Not at all. Can we envision a better future? Perhaps, though the disappointment is tangible—especially considering there’s another Ferrari from the WEC that is winning," Turrini remarked.
On Hamilton, Turrini noted, "That he is slower than Leclerc over a lap is something I expected. What matters is the extent of the difference. I’m not in favor of attacking him; I supported Lewis’ signing and hope he can prove those right who, like me, believed in the sporting merit of the deal. We’ll see, bearing in mind that many of the doubts are justifiable."
Spanish commentator Antonio Lobato speculated that Ferrari's choice to replace Carlos Sainz with Hamilton was influenced by commercial considerations. "Is this what they wanted—to sell caps and t-shirts and nothing more?" he remarked on DAZN. "If the goal is to dominate social media and sell a lot of caps, they should sign Jennifer Lopez instead—you might even sell more."
