Steiner: Lando could be made number two under Piastri
After five stages of the season, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris occupy the first and second places in the individual standings, but their advantage over Max Verstappen is twelve and two points, respectively. McLaren executives publicly say that Oscar and Lando have equal chances, but former Haas CEO Gunther Steiner believes that if Verstappen remains among the contenders for the title after the summer break, McLaren will rely on Piastri and ask Norris to help his teammate.
"It's too early to make such a decision, but if Max continues to perform the way he is doing now, then McLaren will have to split their drivers into number one and two," Steiner shared his opinion on the Red Flags podcast. – I wouldn't call McLaren's advantage over their rivals full-fledged dominance, because they constantly get in the way of something.
If none of the rivals poses a threat to the McLaren drivers in the fight for the title, then Zach Brown will allow them both to fight each other to the end. But if Max poses a threat, then I think after the summer break, the team will say, "Lando, get in line."
We can all see the talent Oscar has. At the same time, he is very calm and perfectly in control of himself. Nothing seems to make him lose his temper. If he finishes second, he's unhappy, but he doesn't throw toys. He's very mature.
I have always said that they are equal in terms of talent, but Oscar has an important trait – he always remains calm, no matter what happens."
