Wasser: The priority is to improve our skills
Frederic Wasser, head of the Scuderia, summarizing the mixed results of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, tried to highlight both the positive aspects and the difficulties that prevent the team from showing better results.
Lewis Hamilton took 4th place yesterday, Charles Leclair finished sixth.
"On the positive side, we showed a steady pace from start to finish of the race," he stressed. – The choice of tactics and its implementation were good. But there are also reasons for some frustration, because if we had started from a higher position, we could have performed better.
We don't understand what happened on Saturday, because there was one picture in qualifying, and today it's completely different. However, in all the last three or four stages of the championship, there was a very noticeable difference between qualifying speed and race pace.
For example, in Jeddah, our car was generally the fastest on race day, although we lost more than three tenths of the pole time in qualifying; this difference was at the same level in Miami and this weekend.
Our car is not efficient enough in qualifying mode, and we must continue to work on this. It's quite obvious that Max was faster than us in Imola and in the race. But in the conditions in which it took place, we were not so far behind, so the priority task is to improve our qualifications. Still, I think we achieved the best possible result in the race.
Lewis was very confident, and he was able to do excellent overtaking. If we talk about Charles, then, perhaps, he was just a little unlucky, although during the race he managed to use all the opportunities that only appeared. But the virtual safety car mode was introduced at an unfortunate moment for him, the same applies to the appearance of a real safety car, so Leclair's frustration is understandable.
As always, it was difficult to predict how long it would take to evacuate a car that had stopped on the highway. There were still too many laps left before the finish, so it was impossible to switch to soft rubber, and Charles made the right decision to stay on the track..."
Vasseur also explained the tactics of the team, which at the end of the race asked Charles Leclair to skip Alex Elbon, a Williams driver: "At that stage of the race, our team was under investigation, and there was a risk that we could get a 5-second penalty. Then we would have lost four or five positions, and I think it made sense to sacrifice just one."
