Alex Wurz does not deny having a connection to the FIA presidential race.
"It’s flattering that Damon believes I could take on the role."
Alex Wurz has not completely dismissed the idea of considering a run for FIA president. This week, the Osterreich newspaper proposed that the former Formula 1 driver might challenge the increasingly controversial Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the elections scheduled for December, possibly alongside potential candidates Carlos Sainz senior and David Richards. The Austrian publication quoted 1996 world champion Damon Hill as supporting Wurz's candidacy, who is also the co-director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association and a race track designer.
"This all started because Damon Hill mentioned me in a tweet," said Wurz, 51, in Monaco. "I was discussing racing events, and Damon replied. He simply asked his followers the question - ‘Next FIA president?’ Of course, it’s nice that Damon thinks I could potentially take on the role of FIA president."
Notably, Wurz did not reject the growing speculation. "Damon brought this up, not me," the Austrian reaffirmed. "In any case, there has been no official announcement. Right now, one third of my mental capacity is focused on my job, another third is for commentating, and the remaining part is for my family."
Recently, Susie Wolff, the wife of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, was also mentioned as a possible contender against Ben Sulayem, but this was apparently dismissed due to potential conflicts of interest. Regarding Wurz’s potential candidacy, Toto Wolff commented in Monaco: "Let’s see who actually runs. Alex has done everything in motorsport; he knows everyone and is certainly an expert." However, he added, "I don’t have enough understanding of the politics at the FIA level."
