Carlos Sainz: We knew it was going to be a difficult weekend.
Three drivers were driving a Williams in Barcelona on Friday. In addition to Carlos Sainz and Alex Elbon, Victor Martin drove Elbon's car in the first session of the free races. For a young member of the Williams Racing Academy, this was the debut in the official Grand Prix session.
Carlos Sainz (14th): "It was tough today, but we expected it. The turns on the track don't suit our car very well, so from the very beginning of the first practice session, I realized what a difficult weekend we were going to have.
We tried to come up with something through the settings and, apparently, chose the right direction, but it's still not enough to win back the necessary time and climb up. Tomorrow we will try to take another step forward, but first we need to figure out a lot. Nevertheless, we will continue to attack throughout the weekend."
Alex Albon (15th): "I've only done one training session so far, so I still have a lot of catching up to do. The car definitely feels better on this track than last year's, but Barcelona has never been a good fit for us, and the high temperatures have only made things more difficult.
There's a lot to analyze tonight to figure out what else to change in the car to better prepare for qualifying."
Victor Martin (19th in the first session): "I had an amazing experience driving Alex's car, and I am very grateful to the team for this opportunity. The car has a lot of power and downforce, but I was really comfortable driving.
I had to stay focused because the team wanted to do a lot in this session. I think the first training session was productive for both of us.
It's incredible that I've driven on the same track with the drivers I watched when I was growing up. I enjoyed every lap!"
