Wolff regrets supplying engines to the McLaren team.
In 2021, McLaren returned to Mercedes engines, and in 2023, they extended the supply contract until 2030. Currently, the team from Woking is leading the constructors' championship, with drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris battling for the title. On Italian Sky Sport, Mercedes chief Toto Wolff ruefully acknowledged that his decision to sign a long-term contract with McLaren was not the wisest.
Toto Wolff: "Remember where McLaren was three or four years ago when we signed the contract to supply them with our fast engines. They were eighteenth at the time, so it was easy for me to make that decision.
However, if I knew then what I know now, I’m not sure that signing that deal was the smartest decision of my life! They have a well-designed car, which makes them so fast, especially in hot conditions.
In Montreal, we performed well thanks to the cool weather, but in Austria, McLaren was faster again. Mercedes is capable of competing for victory on one track, only to fall behind the leaders the next weekend. This is unacceptable for our team and our brand."
