Mekies might ensure that Verstappen remains with Red Bull, according to Schumacher.

"Red Bull made an excellent decision"

Ralf Schumacher believes that Red Bull’s surprising leadership change has greatly enhanced Max Verstappen's chances of remaining with the team past 2025. Speaking on Sky Deutschland’s Backstage Boxengasse, Schumacher lauded Red Bull’s new direction following Christian Horner’s sudden dismissal and the appointment of Laurent Mekies as team principal.

"Red Bull made an excellent decision by placing Mekies in charge," remarked Schumacher. "He has brought a new atmosphere to the team. In a brief time, the mood has shifted significantly, and the approach has completely changed."

Schumacher has been a prominent critic of Horner during the team's recent internal challenges, which coincided with increasing rumors that Verstappen might switch to Mercedes. However, he now observes a complete turnaround.

"I think the summer break will be an opportunity to consider their options: is Red Bull or Mercedes the better choice under the new regulations? Max, his father, and his manager will convene and make a decision in classic style," he stated.

He also suggested that with Horner’s departure, Red Bull might finally be able to attract top-tier technical talent that had previously shied away from working under the former leader.

"That was a previous issue. While Horner was in charge, several well-known figures in Formula 1 were reluctant to get involved," Schumacher noted.

He believes Verstappen could be convinced to stay if Red Bull can present a solid technical plan for 2026.

"If they can provide Max with a roadmap - 'this is our direction, it’ll take a year' - then I can certainly see him remaining. It’s reminiscent of Alonso with the Newey-Honda project."

The former Williams driver also emphasized that Verstappen has never competed for another F1 team and thus has an emotional connection to Red Bull.

"He owes everything to Red Bull. If all is well here, why would he leave?"

Meanwhile, speculation about Mercedes persists, with reports that Verstappen may have met with Toto Wolff during the summer, and George Russell might have to step aside.

"I can’t imagine Russell being Max’s top choice as a teammate," Schumacher added.

Russell, however, dismissed the rumors: "I have thick skin, and honestly, I don't pay attention to what's being said or the rumors circulating. I prefer to focus on my work."
