Vasseur rejects the possibility of Hamilton leaving Ferrari during the season.
"No, no, he will certainly keep driving for us."
Fred Vasseur asserts that Lewis Hamilton will not abandon Ferrari or Formula 1, despite growing speculation following the event in Hungary. After qualifying, Hamilton expressed he felt "useless" and suggested Ferrari should find "another driver." When asked if he was joking, he clarified after the race on Sunday, "No, no, I was completely serious."
In an interview with Sky Italia post-race, he further stated: "I had no expectations for the season, but so far it has been much worse than any other season I’ve experienced. Did I mean what I said? It’s an emotional response. There are many issues behind the scenes that aren’t positive. I'm just looking forward to taking a break."
Vasseur responded by saying, "No, no, he will definitely keep driving for us. We talked yesterday afternoon, last night, and this morning. I understand Lewis’s feelings. He sets high standards for the team and for me, but mostly for himself. He is a seven-time world champion because of his drive to push everyone, especially himself. He’ll bounce back and be competitive again."
DAZN commentator Antonio Lobato remarked, "He’s reached his lowest point. This is the least motivated we have ever seen Lewis Hamilton; he has made some very harsh comments about himself. He clearly needs to find a way out of this situation. I’m not sure if he can do it alone; he may require assistance."
Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes Hamilton might genuinely consider retirement. However, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated, "I am confident he will demonstrate why he is here. He aims to secure his eighth title and will succeed once more."
Bernie Ecclestone, during the event in Hungary, joked, "Lewis is more likely to win an eighth title than that," alluding to rumors about him and Christian Horner potentially investing in Alpine.
Toto Wolff, Hamilton’s former long-time manager at Mercedes, commented, "Lewis is always transparent about his feelings. He has experienced self-doubt before, but he is the greatest driver of all time, and nobody can take that away from him. He has unfinished business in Formula 1. Mercedes has struggled with the new regulations, and Lewis has never been fond of ground effect cars, as they don’t suit him in that context. Next year will bring completely new cars and a different driving experience, along with new power units that will require a smart strategy for energy management."
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc, who secured pole position in Hungary, expressed his frustration during the race and later apologized. He and Vasseur hinted that chassis problems contributed to his drop to fourth place. George Russell suspects Ferrari altered tire pressures and engine settings to prevent floor damage.
"Well, he won't admit that they were on the edge of being illegal," Russell from Mercedes said. "That’s the only inference we can make based on the lap times and engine modes they were utilizing."
