Oscar Piastri has become an ambassador for the Australian charity My Room, which raises funds to fight childhood cancer. He was prompted to take on the role after meeting six-year-old Cruz, a 6-year-old McLaren fan suffering from a rare form of leukemia.
Their meeting took place in the paddock at Melbourne’s Albert Park in the spring of this year, when Oscar gave Cruz an autographed replica of his helmet, and the encounter deeply moved the driver.
My Room established a partnership with the promoters of the Australian Grand Prix in 2019, and the two organizations try to create opportunities for children suffering from such serious illnesses to enjoy memorable experiences during race weekends, as well as to raise necessary funds for their families’ costly treatment.
“I learned about the incredibly valuable role that My Room plays for so many families in Australia dealing with childhood cancer when I met Cruz at the Melbourne Grand Prix in 2025,” Piastri said in an address to fans. “After that I began to understand the work the charity does in such difficult times, offering help and support across a range of areas. The team kept me updated on how Cruz was doing, and it felt natural to decide to become an ambassador for this charity. Childhood cancer brings immense hardship to everyone affected by these illnesses, and it’s wonderful that this organization does tireless work trying to help in any way it can.”
Among other things, Oscar, currently leading the World Championship standings, donated one of his helmets—which he raced in Formula 1 in 2024—to the charity, and that helmet will be auctioned to raise funds for My Room.
