Organizers of the Russian Grand Prix are suing Formula 1 for an outstanding payment.

"Formula 1 is not taking any steps to repay the debt."

The promoters of the canceled Russian Grand Prix have filed a lawsuit against the sport's commercial rights holder in the UK High Court. According to the state-owned news agency Tass, Rosgonki, the firm that organized the Sochi race, is seeking the return of its pre-paid fee for 2022, which is estimated to be around 50 million pounds. F1 canceled the event, which was supported by Vladimir Putin, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Tass reports that while Formula 1 acknowledges the existence of the debt, the funds are currently frozen due to international sanctions. Rosgonki's CEO, Irina Aurenius, stated that negotiations have not been successful. "Formula 1 is not taking any steps to repay the debt in good faith, which is why we've decided to pursue the recovery of funds through the judicial and legal system of Great Britain," she informed Tass. "At this point, we are not prepared to comment on the specifics of the claim, including the amount." Rosgonki also accuses Formula 1 of bringing politics into the sport by canceling the race, which was supposed to transition from Sochi to a new location in St. Petersburg starting in 2023.
