"Someone younger would have been a good fit alongside him."

Former Finnish Formula 1 driver Mika Salo has expressed his support for Cadillac’s choice to sign his fellow countryman Valtteri Bottas as one of their two drivers for 2026. In an interview with Iltalehti, a Finnish daily, Salo remarked, "It was anticipated and is good news. Valtteri made the right decision by remaining with Mercedes as a third driver, which kept him in tune with the development and modern era. He was the only suitable option for Cadillac."

Bottas, 35, faced challenges during his last F1 season with Sauber after departing from Mercedes, leading some to note that he seemed disheartened at the back of the grid. He acknowledges that Cadillac's inaugural season will also be challenging. "The first year will definitely not be straightforward, but preparing for the worst makes it easier mentally," Bottas stated. "Graeme has cautioned me, but I know what I should expect."

Nonetheless, Bottas emphasized that he does not anticipate Cadillac finishing in "last" place during their debut season. Salo, who competed in F1 during the 1990s and early 2000s, told Ilta-Sanomat, another prominent Finnish newspaper, that Bottas’ qualities make him a dependable choice. "Valtteri is reliable and does not damage cars. A younger driver can cause a lot of damage, complicating development work."

However, Salo is less convinced about Sergio Perez, Cadillac’s other signing. German media have already criticized this choice, suggesting that Mick Schumacher would have been a more logical selection. "I believe someone younger would have been more suitable alongside Bottas, but with F1 experience," Salo commented. "I think financial considerations played a significant role in the decision. Cadillac receives substantial support from Mexico."
