Vasser: I have too much catching up to do.

Vasser: I have too much catching up to do.

Frédéric Vasseur believes that in qualifying Ferrari largely managed to improve compared to Friday’s practice, but it cannot be said that he is satisfied with the team’s work. Nevertheless, the Scuderia boss is broadly optimistic ahead of tomorrow’s Dutch Grand Prix.

Frédéric Vasseur: "Today we did a decent job of recovering after yesterday, when we had problems and were losing between six and seven tenths in two corners. However, that means we have to make up too much.

We need to handle Friday better, because when we try to claw back a whole second at once, that is too much in terms of setup, and it also puts too difficult a task in front of the drivers.

At Zandvoort it is hard to find the optimal balance and the right approach to the tyres. The track configuration is such that the middle sector puts a very large load on the tyres, and if you go beyond a certain limit you can lose a lot on the final part of the lap.

In terms of the fight for pole this is one of the most uncomfortable tracks for us, because all the shortcomings of our car show up here. It’s not only Turns 8, 9 and 10 that cause problems – the difficulties start earlier, already in Turn 6, because the tyres are already overheating there.

The qualifying result is a bit disappointing, because I feel we could have been fourth, but Charles admitted he made a mistake in Turn 10. Lewis has been working very well this weekend, but he is in the same position as his team-mate: we had to make up too much after yesterday, when the setup still wasn’t right.

I think we can perform reasonably well tomorrow, because our race pace is fine. McLaren is too far ahead, but a fierce battle will unfold between our drivers, Max Verstappen and George Russell, the outcome of which will depend on strategy choices and effective tyre management."
