Andrea Stella explained the team's tactics at Monza.

After the Italian Grand Prix finish, Andrea Stella explained McLaren's decision to apply team orders and give Lando Norris back his second position, which had been lost due to a poorly executed pit stop. In that situation Oscar Piastri had come out ahead, but he did not try to dispute the team's instruction.

All the more so since he had the right to continue fighting his teammate on track in the remaining laps. But Lando was truly quick, so Oscar finished third, and his lead in the drivers' standings was reduced only slightly.

"Let me begin by saying that the decision we made has nothing to do with what happened in the Netherlands," said the McLaren team principal, recalling Norris's retirement at the previous round of the season. "Lando then failed to finish due to a team error, but this is a completely different situation, and we treat each race separately.

At the Italian Grand Prix, when we started to arrange the sequence of pit stops, we decided to call Oscar into the pits first — a position swap was not part of our plans at all. Unfortunately, it happened, but only because Lando's pit stop was slow.

Since Oscar pitted first and then there was a hiccup on Lando's stop, we thought it would be fair for the drivers to return to the positions they held before the pit stops. I'm sure Oscar was quite happy with that, as during the race he had already been in a comfortable position.

At the same time we once again demonstrated McLaren's values and principles, and I believe that is the right approach."
