The functioning of energy management regulations

FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis has dismissed speculation that the next-generation Formula 1 cars could reach speeds of 400 kilometers per hour. Toto Wolff recently joked that under the 2026 regulations, utilizing all available hybrid power on a long straight could theoretically lead to unprecedented speeds. However, Tombazis stated, as reported by Auto Bild, that such a scenario will never materialize in practice. "I can assure you that there will be no 400 kph," he remarked. "It was more of a joking comment. The mechanism of the energy management rules makes such speeds physically and technically impossible." He also emphasized the governing body's capability to step in if necessary. "We have significant control over the regulations and could intervene for safety reasons," Tombazis noted. "We are very confident that the rules do not permit such speeds."
