"I’m not sure what my plans are yet."

Leonardo Fornaroli is keeping his options open for 2026, which may include the chance to join Formula 1 as a reserve driver instead of competing in races. The leader of the Formula 2 championship confirmed in Baku that he is in talks with F1 teams, sparking speculation about a potential connection with Alpine. However, the 20-year-old Italian, speaking to Sky Italia, remained cautious.
"I’m not sure what my plans are yet," Fornaroli acknowledged. "We’re performing well, and I believe I’m on the right path, but my focus is on finishing this year strong."
A notable element of Fornaroli’s ascent is that, despite his impressive F2 season, he is not linked to any F1 junior academy. "I try not to dwell on that," he stated. "I concentrate on performing well on the track and building the necessary foundations to give my best. I’m not anxious. I view the future with confidence and excitement."
He indicated that his program for 2026 might still include involvement in another series. "Joining next year is challenging," Fornaroli said. "We are searching for the optimal program to help me enhance my skills and prepare for F1 as soon as I can. In the meantime, I would still like to compete in another category that can train me for the future."
Nonetheless, Fornaroli feels he could manage the leap straight to Formula 1, citing fellow Italian Kimi Antonelli’s swift progress. "I believe all the rookies are doing an excellent job. I’m very pleased with Kimi’s performance," he remarked, despite Antonelli’s documented difficulties in 2025.
"Those are the highs and lows of motorsport – it’s part of the game," Fornaroli explained. "Just two years ago, he was in Formula Regional. He transitioned directly to F2 and then to F1. He’s the youngest on the grid, the youngest polesitter, and he’s already achieved a podium finish. He’s having a remarkable season."
