Norris: We are still aiming for victory.

Lando Norris on the title fight, his chances in the remaining races and McLaren’s strengths…

Question: Lando, you won in Singapore last year. How confident are you of success now?

Lando Norris: Confident. Last year was very successful. We were strong in Singapore, I had a good race, it was very enjoyable. I’ve always liked it here, ever since my first time in 2019.

The forecast looks a bit worse now than in previous years, but this is one of my favourite tracks, I’m happy and ready to get to work.

Question: How do you assess the balance of power at the moment? Max Verstappen won the last two races. Do you think that was due to the characteristics of Monza and Baku, or will he now be a serious rival at all tracks?

Lando Norris: A serious rival. At the start of the season they were fighting for wins in the first six or seven races, fighting with us in the drivers’ championship. Then we brought some upgrades, improved the car a bit. A couple of weeks ago they upgraded the car, and it seems they’re back on our level.

We’re still aiming to win every race, want to dominate and show the form we’ve shown all season. You know that at this track Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull were all very close. So we expect a fight, especially with him.

Question: Just 13 points this weekend would give McLaren the Constructors’ Championship early. Looking back at 2025, what stands out most to you? What’s the secret of McLaren’s success?

Lando Norris: Of course, the drivers! The car is pretty average!

Seriously, there are two factors. Obviously, to win the Constructors’ Championship you need the best car. And I think our car was the best in 95% of the races. But there are a few exceptions. For example, in Monza we weren’t fast enough. In Baku the pace was there, but we didn’t operate in the best way. There were a couple of races where we weren’t perfect. But as a constructor, the team deserved this success.

We have two good drivers. There are many other teams with two great drivers, and although I don’t like to say it, there aren’t teams where both drivers deliver consistently high results every weekend like Oscar and I.

But it’s easier for us to show such results because most of the time we’re ahead of everyone. In that sense it’s a bit easier for us. But to win the Constructors’ Championship you need two drivers who consistently finish races and deliver results every weekend. And we manage that. Maybe not in the last two races, but up to this point we were the best driver pairing. We had the best car, and we were the best team.

Question: A few words about the drivers’ championship. Right now you are one victory behind Oscar. How do you assess your chances in the remaining races?

Lando Norris: You ask me that every time, and I give the same answer.

Question: How did you take the news that Romain Grosjean will be back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for tests, given you were there the day of his crash…

Lando Norris: I’m happy for him. I thought he had tests with Mercedes. Didn’t he?

I think it’s good for him and for the team. Nobody wanted it to end the way it did then. But Romain keeps racing, he dreamed of returning to an F1 cockpit. It’s nice when dreams come true.

Question: A month ago in Monza, talking about the title fight, you said it would be easier if other drivers finished between you and Oscar. Considering Max’s results in the last two Grands Prix — he won both starting from pole — did you get what you were hoping for?

Lando Norris: I said it would be easier if I always finished first and he third, but that’s not going to happen. Hard to say. I think in Baku we had the pace to win, and we had the car to win, but we didn’t. Not sure we would necessarily have taken pole, but we had a chance to fight Max. In Monza they were just too quick for us.

There may be other races ahead where they’ll be too quick for us, that’s quite possible. Last year he qualified here just a tenth behind me. Even when we were dominating, he was only a tenth off. So I expect he’ll be quick at many tracks this season.

In Las Vegas we face another low-downforce track where we won’t look as good as in other places. We know they have a chance, but for now we’re focused only on ourselves. I’ll try to get the most out of every session, on Saturday and on Sunday.

Question: Max recently raced at the Nürburgring. You said you’d like to race at Le Mans. How much does a driver’s ability to switch between categories add to their greatness? And what are your plans in that regard for the future?

Lando Norris: It’s cool. Great that he has the opportunity to do what he wants. I think after four championship titles you have more leeway to choose what you want to do.

Everyone knows how much Max loves all that. And yes, it’s great that he does something else that he enjoys. I don’t know how much it adds to his greatness, but the fact that he can participate in any series and probably be the best shows how good he is. I’ve said that many times.

I haven’t thought about my future yet. One day I’ll decide to leave Formula 1 and do other things — play golf and have fun somewhere else. But I really respect what Max does, and I really respect Max, as I’ve always said. I like the Nordschleife, it’s another place where I’d like to try my hand one day.
