Domenicali realistic regarding Imola's F1 prospects.
Stefano Domenicali has expressed his acceptance of Imola's exclusion from the Formula 1 calendar, despite the fact that it is the circuit where he was born. The F1 CEO mentioned on Gianluca Gazzoli’s The BSMT podcast that historical significance alone does not guarantee a spot on the busy schedule. "While a grand prix with historical value adds something special, it's still not sufficient," he stated.
Domenicali pointed out that many of today's younger fans often do not prioritize past achievements or traditions. "For numerous young followers of F1 today, racing in Monte Carlo as opposed to the new Las Vegas circuit is of no real significance to them," he noted.
He further emphasized that venues need to invest in infrastructure and facilities for fans to validate their positions. "While history is an asset, it can also be a drawback if the potential for growth is lacking," the Italian remarked, referencing the increasing expectations aligned with rising ticket prices.
Nonetheless, he did not completely dismiss the possibility of Imola returning, suggesting that the current trend of rotating venues in F1 might provide an opportunity. "If Imola can create a well-structured proposal, why not?" he said.
Domenicali acknowledged that justifying two grands prix in Italy is becoming more challenging, as Imola's limited footprint and hotel accommodations hinder future development. "With the growing global focus on F1, having two races in the same country requires compelling reasons," he explained. "Imola is located in a city and operates in a relatively confined context, making it hard to envision development in terms of infrastructure and hotels, as it has its constraints. Furthermore, we are now discussing investment levels that are significantly different from the past."
