"Extending a contract for an additional year is never beneficial for anyone."

Toto Wolff has acknowledged that Mercedes and George Russell could part ways at the conclusion of 2026, despite the Brit recently signing what is said to be a new multi-year agreement. This announcement has put an end to months of speculation concerning Mercedes’ reluctance to renew Russell's contract—a delay interpreted as the team's attempt to keep options open for Max Verstappen from 2027.

Russell, who is currently performing strongly and has garnered praise for his leadership within the team, is believed to have negotiated a considerable salary increase to approximately EUR 35 million, although sources indicate that the contract includes several exit clauses. "I think the contract figures are lower than what people assume," Russell remarked with a smile. "Everyone seems to think they’re worth more than they actually are. But Toto was very generous."

It is reported that Wolff ultimately consented to the higher salary to secure Russell's commitment while retaining flexibility due to the 2026 exit clause. "I believe we need stability, and extending a contract for a year is never advantageous for anyone," Wolff stated to reporters. "But without going into specifics, there are certain clauses that pertain to this, and we want both the driver and the team to feel that this is the direction we are heading in, that we are very pleased with this lineup and that we have a great balance."

Nonetheless, not all analysts agree with Mercedes’ long-term strategy. Many insiders think that Wolff should aim for a pairing of George Russell and Max Verstappen for 2027, rather than Verstappen alongside Kimi Antonelli. When asked about the possibility of Russell sharing a garage with Verstappen, Wolff replied, "It would certainly be entertaining for everyone. But we don't wish to stir up any rumors. Kimi and George are who we want to collaborate with in the future. They form a good lineup."

Despite this, speculation tying Verstappen to Brackley persists. Merely hours after Russell’s contract was announced, Wolff faced further inquiries about it. "Here we go again—October!" he chuckled. "I believe that being open and transparent is the best approach moving forward. Sometimes that can backfire. When reflecting, there may have been moments that could have turned out better—coincidences that occurred. However, I’ve always handled things in the most straightforward and fair manner. I stand by the decisions regarding the drivers—George and Kimi. As I mentioned, this is the full focus and has always been the aim, even during the more challenging times over the summer."
