Two teams are suspected of violating the regulations.
Two Formula 1 teams are suspected of breaching the financial regulations and possibly exceeding the permissible spending in 2024.
Under the regulations, last season each team could spend no more than $135 million, but accounting for inflation and other factors that amount rose to nearly $165 million. All teams submit financial reports to the FIA, following which the federation issues certificates stating that the expenditures are within the permitted limits.
Usually these certificates are issued in September, but this year that did not happen. The last time there was a delay in issuing the certificates was in 2021, when Red Bull exceeded the permissible budget by 1.6% and were fined $7 million for it. In addition, the team had their wind-tunnel time reduced.
As a result of the FIA’s prolonged silence, rumours began circulating in the Austin paddock that the federation had found financial breaches this year. By the Mexico round the rumours had become more specific.
According to Planet F1, violations were found at two teams, and one of those teams is Aston Martin. Their financial reporting for 2024 raised questions with the FIA, but in this case it is not about a factual exceedance of the permitted amount, rather about administrative violations. It may be a matter of errors in paperwork, but there are no details yet.
The violation by the second team, which is not named, is “significant.” Several sources reported that it concerns an overrun of last year’s spending cap. Moreover, the same sources say that this team is already disputing that it violated the financial regulations.
In turn, at the FIA in Mexico they issued a brief statement urging people to await the publication of the official results: “The FIA’s administration for expenditure control is completing the review of submissions made by teams and power unit manufacturers for 2024. The results are expected to be announced shortly.
FIA does not comment on individual submissions made by specific teams and/or power unit manufacturers. In accordance with established practice, the results of the review will be published after the final consideration of all submissions.”
