Father and son Doohan seen at Super Formula.
A larger strategy to secure a spot for 26
Jack Doohan and his renowned father, Mick, have been seen in Japan as the Australian driver considers a potential transition to the Super Formula Championship for 2026. As reported by Japan’s as-web.jp, the duo attended the recent Super GT finale at Motegi, where they met with various team representatives to discuss the possibility of a full-season seat in the country’s premier single-seater series. Doohan's contract with Alpine, which saw him replaced by Franco Colapinto earlier in 2025, ends this year. With Colapinto now likely to remain alongside Pierre Gasly at the team for 2026, the 22-year-old Doohan is believed to be exploring new prospects outside of Formula 1. The report indicates that the trip to Japan is part of a broader strategy to secure a position in Super Formula, where world rally convert Kalle Rovanpera will compete next season as well. As-Web also mentions that several notable figures from Formula 2, including championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli and Dutch driver Richard Verschoor, are in discussions with Japanese teams for 2026. The publication highlights that the overlapping schedules of F1 and Super Formula next season would still permit reserve drivers to attend most grands prix, potentially making the Japanese series an appealing choice for drivers looking to stay race-ready while keeping F1 connections.
