Alpine acknowledges the financial advantages of re-signing Colapinto.
"Honestly, we considered many options."
Alpine has confirmed that Franco Colapinto will continue with the team in 2026, putting an end to uncertainty regarding his future. The 22-year-old Argentinian, who joined Alpine on loan from Williams earlier this season, faced pressure following a challenging start and recent issues related to disregarded team orders. However, a recent positive shift and increased sponsorship support from e-commerce giant Mercado Libre, which provided Alpine with a special livery for the American races, helped secure his position.
Team manager Steve Nielsen stated that Alpine evaluated several candidates before opting to retain Colapinto. "To be honest, we had numerous options on the table - and many other drivers who have since signed elsewhere - but over time, we leaned towards keeping Franco," he shared with reporters.
Nielsen also admitted that financial considerations influenced the decision. "Of course, the financial aspects cannot be overlooked," he noted. "However, in the end, we kept Franco because of his talent, and the financial benefits he brings are a fortunate bonus."
Nielsen commended Colapinto’s progress throughout the season. "Franco had a tough start, to be honest, but gradually - thanks to having Pierre (Gasly) as a benchmark - he has elevated his performance and taken on Pierre. He's even outpaced Pierre on several occasions, which ultimately secured him a seat for next year."
Williams boss James Vowles, who oversaw Colapinto’s development and maintains long-term ties with the Argentine, also lauded his resurgence: "Certainly, over the last seven races, it's been a significant turnaround for him. He's demonstrating the performance I witnessed when he was with Williams. I believe he has earned that seat for next year, and I felt incredibly proud when they made their announcement today."
