"It’s been an amazing journey so early in his career."
Mark Webber is confident that Oscar Piastri will bounce back from his recent decline in performance as the Australian's dwindling title aspirations come under increased scrutiny. After comfortably leading the championship earlier in the season, Piastri now finds himself 24 points behind his teammate Lando Norris, amidst rising speculation of favoritism within McLaren—rumors that Webber, his long-time manager, has chosen not to address publicly.
In an interview with Channel 4, Webber emphasized the need to help Piastri regain his rhythm before the upcoming race in Las Vegas. "We’ll get him turned around," Webber stated. "I don’t believe he lacks motivation. It’s been a challenging stretch for him, but this is about character—tapping into the deep motivations necessary at this stage to make a comeback. This is his third year in F1, so he needs to rediscover that fighting spirit."
Webber asserted that Piastri’s position in the title contest is remarkable for someone of his age and experience. "It’s been an incredible journey so early in his career to be contending for a world title," he remarked. "Year three is quite unprecedented; I think only Lewis has done something similar. When I fought for mine, I was much older—Oscar is still learning. It’s about encouragement, seizing opportunities, and maintaining his confidence."
Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, echoed these sentiments, committing to assist Piastri in regaining his form. "We must ensure we can make the most of the car's potential and help Oscar drive as effectively as possible in all conditions," said Stella. "Recently, he’s had to compete on low-grip tracks and has encountered challenges related to his natural driving style. We will calmly analyze how to provide support."
Russian commentator Alexey Popov believes that while Max Verstappen is practically out of the title race, Piastri is still in contention. "In Oscar’s case, we’re looking at a margin of less than one victory," Popov mentioned. "However, there is the potential for both an upward and downward spiral—and for now, the odds favor Lando. Yet the title is not lost just yet."
